Mahathir breaks uncharacteristic 48 hours of silence with photos of him back at work

Perhaps he's seeing how the cards will fall.

A lot has gone down in Malaysian politics in the last 48 hours.

Silent for the past 48 hours

One of the pivotal players involved, Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, however, has given scant remarks on the episode that unfolded rapidly since Sunday night, Feb. 23.

The resignation letter that he submitted to the Malaysian king was the only piece of material that resembled any sort of stance that political observers have seen from him so far.

For a man who is prone to giving off-the-cuff remarks, the 94-year-old has been uncharacteristically quiet.

His silence appears to indicate that he is monitoring things at the moment, and seeing how events are going to play out.

But that silence was broken when Mahathir showed up for work back in the office and posted some photos on Tuesday, Feb. 25:

Showed up for work as usual with empty Cabinet

Mahathir showed up for work as usual at about 9:30am -- a day after he quit -- at the Perdana Putra building, Free Malaysia Today reported.

While his resignation was accepted by the king, the latter announced on Monday, Feb. 24, that he had also appointed Mahathir as interim Prime Minister, which would last for a maximum of 10 days, according to Malaysiakini.

Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Mohd Zuki Ali also announced that members of the Cabinet had been relieved of their duties following the resignation of Mahathir as prime minister, Malay Mail reported.

Here's a rundown of the series of events that took place in our neighbour up north:
