Community events in Singapore will not be cancelled over fears of the Wuhan novel coronavirus, but proceed with "enhanced measures".

Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said during a press conference on Jan. 27 that event organisers will refer to and carry out measures in compliance with guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

For larger-scale events, such as the Chingay parade and the River Hongbao, enhanced measures for temperature screening will be implemented, with additional medical staff also deployed to provide assistance as necessary.

All contractors, volunteers and local and overseas performers involved in these events will also be required to abide by MOH's guidelines. Chan added:

"As Minister Lawrence Wong has said, we advise people who are not feeling well to seek medical help immediately and avoid participation in activities with large crowds. And most importantly, we encourage everyone to take personal hygiene measures to safeguard their own wellbeing."

Community partners to provide support

Chan said that the government's community network and partners, including the People's Association (PA), will continue to support the vulnerable in the community.

They will also fight rumours and fake news that are spread and provide feedback to the government on concerns of the community, similar to previous national situations such as the SARS virus and transboundary haze.
