It is a well-known fact that the late President Ong Teng Cheong was an architect by training who had also worked with the Ministry of National Development as a town planner from 1967 to 1971.

His wife, the late Ling Siew May, was also an architect and principle partner of Ong & Ong Architect, a firm started by the husband and wife team in 1971.

The first lady took over the company in 1993 upon her husband's election as the fifth president of the Republic of Singapore and the first head of state to be popularly elected through the people’s vote in a presidential election.

Her notable architectural achievements include the preservation and restoration of Chijmes.

Following the passing of the president and the first lady in 2002 and 1999 respectively, Ong Tze Boon -- the couple's second son -- has taken over the reins of his parents' company and turned it into an established juggernaut of a firm, which is called Ong&Ong Corporate.

In an interview, shot in Mandarin by Shin Min Daily News and put out on March 6, 2016, it shows how one of the president's children is coming along, having attained a relatively high profile status in Singapore's nascent creative class space, despite not having learned the ropes fully when he was handed the keys to company at the age of 29.

Here are some interesting snippets from the video translated into English:

Being Ong Teng Cheong's son has put Ong Tze Boon under considerable pressure.

He said: "For example, if I scored a B, people will say, 'Are you sure? He only got a B? Do you know who his father is?'"

"If I scored an A, it's the same. They will say, 'Of course he scored an A. Do you know who his father is?'"

Thus, after National Service, he decided it was more "comfortable" to study overseas.

And with that, he went to America.

His return saw him taking over the reins of Ong&Ong and he set his mind to expand the company. "I decided to grow the company and make my parents proud."

The darkest period of his life happened in 2003.

"My mother passed away in 1999. My dad passed away in 2002. When my mother passed away, I was only 29 and was tasked with running the company. I didn't study finance and didn't have that kind of experience. There was also Sars... Luckily a few customers supported us and gave us a few projects.

It was also then when he realised that providing architectural design wasn't enough. The company needed an all-round approach, he said.

With the new approach, he subsequently turned the company into a multinational cooperation with over 1,000 employees.

He has a 14-year-old son and wishes that he doesn't have to live with the pressure.

And he's a marathoner. Sleeps four to five hours daily, wakes up at 5am to train. In January this year, he ran seven marathons in seven days at seven different continents for charity.
