The Workers' Party (WP) will contest a total of 28 seats in the upcoming General Election: 5 Group Representation Constituencies and 5 Single Member Constituencies.

WP chairwoman Sylvia Lim told Channel News Asia on Sunday, July 26, 2015, they are going to field 28 candidates in total.

The 5 GRCs they will contest are Aljunied, Marine Parade, East Coast, Jalan Besar and Nee Soon.

Aljunied, Marine Parade, Nee Soon are five-member GRCs, while East Coast and Jalan Besar are four-member GRCs.

The 5 SMCs which they will compete in are Hougang, Punggol East, Fengshan, MacPherson and Sengkang West.

WP's strategy is also echoed by NCMP Gerald Giam on his Facebook:

In GE2011 four years ago, they fielded 23 candidates in 4 GRCs: Aljunied, East Coast, Nee Soon and now defunct Moumein-Kallang, and 4 SMCs: Hougang, Punggol East, Sengkang West and Joo Chiat, which has been wiped off the map by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee.

What the announcement means:

Lim's announcement is seen as sending a strong signal to the other opposition parties, who have said they would be meeting to talk about avoid contesting in the same wards to prevent multi-cornered fights.

More importantly, WP is sending a "by-election effect" signal to the electorate -- vote for the strongest opposition party in Singapore and one does not risk losing the People's Action Party (PAP) as the government.

This is because WP will need to contest in at least 45 seats in order to be Singapore's ruling party.
